N2 - Background: Atg3 is an E2-like enzyme in the Atg8 system, an autophagy-related ubiquitin-like conjugation system. Results: Atg3 is localized to the isolation membrane, which is an intermediate structure of an autophagosome. Conclusion: Atg3 is likely to play an important role in autophagosome formation at the isolation membrane. Significance: This result provides new insights into the role of the ubiquitin-like system in organelle biogenesis.
