Abstract

Partial discharge (PD) adversely affects the long-term reliability of products. It is imperative that the ability to accurately locate these discharge sites is extremely important for developing new module packages and for taking effective countermeasures. Mitsubishi Electric has developed an x-ray induced PD testing procedure for locating PD sites within the insulation material of power devices. The location of discharge sites can be pointed by scanning the surface of power modules with a convergent x-ray beam of the developed testing system.
