The authors recently reported a new method of preparing poly(p-phenylene sulfide) (PPS) by the oxidative polymerization of diphenyl disulfide or thiophenol as the starting material. Quinones have been found to be effective as oxidizers for this polymerization. Oxidative polymerization with quinones proceeds stoichiometrically and gives ultrapure PPS, but requires the presence of acid. This paper describes the effect of acid on PPS formation. The authors found that PPS is efficiently formed by oxidative polymerization in the presence of trifluoromethane sulfonic acid because of its strong acidity. The mechanism of this oxidative polymerization is discussed.
