Computer image processing technology was applied to cleavage fracture surface analysis and an algorithm for the estimation of 3-dimensional cleavage facet boundaries and facet areas were developed. The algorithm was applied to analyze the cleavage fracture surfaces of mild steel and HT80 steel. The effect of the threshold angle on the estimated facet numbers, distribution of the values of α and the 3-dimensional facet areas are discussed. The method is useful for a relationship between cleavage fracture and microstructures such as ferrite and prior austenite grain sizes.
