At the EXPO 2005 Aichi Japan, many robot demonstrations were featured as part of the NEDO project for the practical application of next-generation robots. FUJITSU LIMITED, AISIN SEIKIco.LTD., and AIST jointly developed an intelligent wheelchair robot, 'TAO Aicle' and undertook several demonstration experiments at the EXPO. TAO Aicle can accurately determine its position and direction, and travels to its destination autonomously. We applied location-based service (LBS) technology to support the robot's control and information provision functions. In this paper we introduce the mechanisms that allow TAO Aicle's autonomous operation, supported by LBS, and report the results of the experiments.
