Backlog can become a buffer in the sense that when demand falls, having backlog reduces the chance of idle time onset in the shop. In connection w/ fluctuations in demand, the effect of backlog as a buffer on the expectation of idle time ratio and the probability of no generation of idle time in n successive periods, were investigated based on a one-process-one-machine model. Also, the effect of backlog used as a buffer on the backlog at the end of n periods was analyzed. The analysis was performed theoretically for the first period and numerically for the second period onwards.
