N2 - As a novel approach to the preparation of iron nanoparticles, a two-phase liquid-liquid system was applied. Efficient transfer of iron(III) species from aqueous solution to toluene as tetrachloroferrate(III) was found to depend on the presence of hydrochloric acid. In the reduction process, the addition of dodecanethiol to toluene resulted in the suppression of the excessive growth of oxides or hydroxides. The dominant phase was a-Fe, and the magnetic properties of the product were suggested to reflect the presence of a γ-Fe 2O3 (or Fe3O4) subphase.
