A hyperbaric membrane oxygenator made of ethylene and vinyl alcohol copolymer was developed for extracorporal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Either gas carrier solution oxygenated with hyperbaric (up to 1460 mm Hg) oxygen gas was perfused or hyperbaric O2 itself was ventilated extracapillarily while saline solution or bovine blood was perfused intracapillarily in in vitro experiments. Sherwood number increased as transmembrane pressure (TMP) increased. Membrane resistance decreased as the TMP increased. The membrane resistance was estimated to be zero at TMP of 1060 mm Hg. This oxygenator can work either as an oxygenator and dialyzer in liquid-liquid mode or as an oxygenator in gas-liquid mode. This can be effective for the ECMO patients, especially those with multiple organ failure.
