This paper presents a fundamental methodology of a bio-inspired monitoring system for the damage detection utilizing piezoelectric cables. In the proposed system, the piezoelectric cable serves as the nerves of beings. The electrical output from the piezoelectric cable is proportional to the stress imparted to the cable. The piezoelectric cable mounted near the surface of the structural elements can detect the damage occurrence. Such piezoelectric cables could provide the structures with the self-sensing capability for the damage assessment. First of all, the characteristics of the piezoelectric cables are experimentally investigated. Next, three-point bending tests are conducted utilizing a concrete beam embedded with the piezoelectric cable to demonstrate the effectiveness of this self-sensing concrete. Finally, the effectiveness of the smart beam with the bio-inspired monitoring system is demonstrated.
