Impulse breakdown characteristics of two kinds of linear low density polyethylene samples (LL-A, LL-B) were investigated over the temperature range from room temperature to 130 degree C. Breakdown strength (E//B) of LL-A is independent of temperature below 100 degree C and decreases with thickness. E//B of LL-B, which has lower density than LL-A, decreases with temperature and is independent of thickness. From these results, it is concluded that breakdown of LL-A is due to electron avalanche and that of LL-B is due to electron thermal breakdown. Both LL-A and LL-B show higher breakdown strengths than LDPE at high temperatures.
