A common phenomenon in trenchless technology is the occurrence of voids in grouting. We investigate the impact of such voids on buckling of an encased liner under external pressure using a numerical solution of the nonlinear contact analysis method. The buckling behavior is clarified and the critical pressure is tested theoretically. An encased liner always fails in single-lobe buckling if there are no voids. Voids greatly change the behavior of the encased liner; as the void size increases, the buckling mode may switch from singlelobe buckling to free buckling of an arch even at an infinitely long pipe, and the buckling strength decreases sharply in stages.
