It has been already recognized that oxygen transfer performance in the membrane artificial lung is significantly improved by means of secondary flow motion induced in the curved tube. The performance of carbon dioxide removal is also increased by a similar convective effect only if the membrane resistance of CO**2 transfer is reduced. The use of a microporous membrane employed in this study results in a significant improvement of CO**2 removal in the curved tube. The CO**2 removal rate in microporous curved tubes (such as helical coil and woven configurations) goes up to 200 ml/min, m**2. The pulsation in the curved tube also gives a strong augmentation effect on the CO**2 removal. This feature is desirable for the design of CO**2 removal membrane lung used in ECCO**2R (Extracorporeal CO//2 Removal).
