The amount of selection performed by a switching network is defined as the difference between the amount of output information and the input information which is handled by the controller of the switching network, and the properties of this amount are explored. This definition is applicable not only to a simple matrix but also to exchanges and exchange networks. Based on comparison between the amount of actual selection per incoming line and loss probability and comparison between the amount of actual selection per crosspoint and crosspoint efficiency, the efficiency of switching networks is studied.
