A chemical flow control method using functional chemical is discussed. The method uses functional chemicals, which have hydrophobic and hydrophilic characteristics. A passive flow control of this method is shown by coating these chemicals separately on a control surface. Drop tests of an ogive shape model in water tower show that combinations of hydrophobic and hydrophilic coatings vary the speed in dropping direction by the maximum 22%. By controlling the coating area and coating location, intermediate speeds are obtained. As an active flow control, a temperature-sensitive micelle polymer is shown. This polymer is hydrophobic at higher temperature, while it is hydrophilic at lower temperature. The temperature range tested is from 25°C to 64°C. The rate of change in contact angle is ranged from 0.9 degree/°C to 1.6 degree/°C.
