Numerical simulations of the flows over annular plug nozzles are conducted and the flow-field for the boat-tail drag characteristics to be clarified. The plug nozzle configuration is taken from the ATREX (Air Turbo Ram jet) engine under development at the ISAS. The simulations are carried out for the axi-symmetric configuration using Navier-Stokes equations. The computed result shows that the primary cause of the boat-tail drag turns out to be the low pressure region in front of the separation shock wave that occurs by the interaction of the main flow and the nozzle plume. The flow field with the secondary flow injection is next simulated and the result shows that the pressure in that region increases and the effect of the secondary flow injection for the drag reduction is demonstrated. The effect of the turbulence model used in the computation is discussed to ensure the reliability of the solutions.
