We defined our compulsory subject for freshmen, 'Information Processing', for computer literacy education. The subject consists of three elements such as a) computer awareness, b) computer skills, c) communication with the computer. The subject also consists of about 7 topics: 1) exercises on the Keyboard, 2) Japanese Word Processing, 3) Waseda University Information Network Systems (WINE), 4) basic knowledge of Computer Software & Hardware, 5) introduction to programming, 6) Multi-User System for Interactive Computing/System Product (MUSIC/SP; TSS mode), and 7) BASIC (grammar and programming). Justification for selection of the 7 topics and sequencing of these elements were partially demonstrated. It was suggested that individualization will be necessary to help all the students to obtain computer literacy.
