To assist the dentist-manager establish the best practice configuration (essentially, the numbers of operatories and workers of various qualifications), scheduling procedure, and other management procedures, a methodology involving a computer simulation has been developed to compare different options in terms of economic and other criteria. This paper describes the procedure and presents some results obtained by using it. It has been found that the dental practice is not highly sensitive to the way in which patients' appointments are scheduled. Much more important is the practice configuration. Its economic and other implications are investigated as functions of the number and mix of patients anticipated.
