An advantage of using vesicles (liposomes) as drug delivery carriers is that their pharmacokinetics can be controlled by surface characteristics, which can permit specific delivery of the encapsulated agents to organs or cells in vivo. We discovered a surface-modified vesicle which can target bone marrow through systemic circulation. This vesicle is a potent carrier to deliver therapeutic agents into bone marrow in treatment of hematopoietic disorders such as tumor and myelosuppression. In this report, we demonstrate that this surface-modified vesicle functions as carrier to deliver encapsulated agents into bone marrow.
