This field survey was conducted during the summer in actual bedrooms, and used polysomnography to evaluate how the thermal environment affected sleep quality. Sleep quality was evaluated by analyzing electroencephalogram, electro-oculogram, and electromyogram signals, which were measured continuously during sleep. It was found that the effect of the thermal environment i.e., air temperature, velocity and turbulence, on sleep quality varied according to the sleep cycle and stages. In relation, the effect of air turbulence depends mainly on the air temperature. Air turbulence affected sleep when temperatures were low or neutral. Under warm temperatures, air turbulence had few effect on sleep.
