This paper covers transmission electron microscopy and on-Line thermal treatment-mass spectrometry (TTMS) data for tetra-methoxy-phenylporphyrin (H//2TMPP), CoTMPP and (FeTMPP)//2O adsorbed on Vulcan XC-72 carbon (appr. 250 m**2/g). These experiments were aimed at determining the physical state of the metal, the onset temperature for the decomposition of the macrocycle and the nature of the volatile species produced as a result of the heat treatment. The heat treatment in the TTMS experiments was conducted in the presence of flowing He gas at one atmosphere pressure. These conditions are very similar to those encountered in the preparation of materials which exhibit high catalytic activity.
