N2 - In the present paper, rail-shear tests of the unidirectional GFRP and CFRP were carried out. To avoid premature failures, a modified experimental procedure is present in the rail-shear test. Load-displacement curves were investigated in detail, which were related to the fracture behavior. Furthermore, stress intensity factors at maximum load were estimated as the mode II fracture toughness. These values of the both specimen were found to be almost same. To make clear the above experimental results, fracture toughness tests on the matrix and fractographic observation of the FRP were carried out and discussed.
