Experimental Verification of Good Spatial Resolution of Fault Location in a Cable by Frequency Domain Reflectometry

We are developing a novel method to detect a fault in a cable and to locate its position. The method is based on frequency domain reflectometry and inverse fast Fourier transform. Its basic principle is that electromagnetic waves are reflected at positions where the cable's characteristic impedance is changed. In this presentation, the very high spatial resolution of this fault location method is demonstrated by showing plenty of experimental results taken using mainly co-axial cables insulated with low-density polyethylene.
