Slag foaming can occur intentionally or inadvertently whenever gas bubbles pass through a slag layer. Principles of foam stability, foam life, and limits to foam depth are review. Available correlations for the foam index are reviewed. Examples are given of experimental results and industrial implications, including suppression of foaming by carbon particles.
