N2 - An attempt has been made to develop a method for obtaining data which might clarify human problem-solving processes explicitly. Called the Blank Production System, it is basically a production system which, however, starts without any knowledge. Three different kinds of problem-solving tasks were prepared, and, for each task, two or three subjects, who were somewhat accustomed to computer use, were asked to instruct the system his/her way to solve the given problem. The instruction was given in the form of if-then rules. In spite of the fact that the interface of the system was far from being well-refined, the tasks were completed properly, and various instructions in the form of production were acquired by the system.
