Worldwide ISDN deployment is providing a good opportunity for the expansion of videoconferencing and videophone services. However, standard video coding techniques are essential for compatibility. NTT has been actively contributing to the international standardization of subprimary rate video codecs. As a part of this activity, we have developed Flexible Hardware, the test bed for verification and optimization of CCITT specifications. Successful interconnection tests have been performed in conjunction with other organizations nationally as well as internationally. This paper presents the video coding technology and compatibility test results.
