Turbulence in blood flow is believed to cause hemolysis, thrombus formation, damage to endothelial cells, atherosclerosis, and so on. Stein and Sabbah observed turbulence in the human aorta under the physiologically normal condition, particularly in a patient implanted with a prosthetic heart valve in the aortic position. Although the turbulence intensity and turbulence energy spectrum in the flow around prosthetic valves have been determined by means of the laser-Doppler anemometer, the turbulence produced under pulsatile flow condition has not been studied in detail. The present paper deals with the cross-sectional and axial distributions of turbulence intensity, change in the turbulence energy spectrum and the spatial correlation of turbulence velocities observed behind a prosthetic heart valve during cardiac cycle.
