We showed the low-loss and low-crosstalk all-fiber-based six-mode multiplexer and demultiplexer. With the fabricated six-mode multiplexer and demultiplexer, we measured BER characteristics of six-mode-multiplexed DP-QPSK and DP-16QAM signals in the back-to-back configuration. The penalty due to the six-mode multiplexing was suppressed to be 2 dB for both formats as long as 12?12MIMO was used. For QPSK signals, the penalty by dividing into 4?4/2?2MIMO was suppressed to be 1 dB, showing that the fabricated mode multiplexer and demultiplexer are applicable to the weakly-coupled MDM systems. This work was supported in part by SCOPE, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Japan.
