N2 - Your This paper investigates the effect on the performance of two production control mechanisms, viz. push and pull, on a disassembly line where interruptions are caused by preventive maintenance. In the push system, blocking and starvation are compensated by the large amount of inventories stored in the buffers. Thus, the system must disassemble components prior to the arrival of actual demand. Alternatively, the multi-kanban pull system offsets the blocking and starvation by manipulating the kanban routing. Hence, it directs kanban to the proper workstation based on system’s current status. Compared to the push system, the pull system tends to keep smaller amounts of inventories while attempting to service the actual demand. Through a case example, we present advantages and disadvantages of both systems.
