Japanese folk songs have unique melody structures different from those of western music and other countries' music. From the viewpoint of ethnology, it is meaningful to develop a computer-based method to extract the melody structure of folk songs collected from many places throughout Japan. This paper describes an automatic melody analysis using a production system. Embedded knowledge, which is expressed in a rule format in this case, is mostly based on the studies of a famous musicologist.
