The luminescence and waveguide properties of single In2O 3 nanofibers were investigated by means of scanning near-field optical microscopy. The nanofibers showed spatially uniform emission intensity in photoluminescence (PL) images. This emission is associated with a PL emission band centered at ∼630 nm. We found that this PL light is propagated through the nanofiber over a distance of several hundreds of micrometers. By measuring the PL intensity for different propagating distances, the optical loss of single nanofibers was evaluated. Waveguiding behavior for incident light with different wavelengths in the visible region was also observed. These results indicate that In2O3 nanofibers can be used as good waveguide elements for integrated photonic applications.
