A rapidly converging optimization approach is presented for alleviating transmission line overloads in a power system by reallocating generator outputs and optimizing the real power flow. The algorithm is based on a mathematical model of linearized relationships between line flows and control variables using generation shifting sensitivity coefficients. The procedure also deals with various operating constraints such as upper and lower bounds of generator output, up-down rate, and the total power balance between generation and demand. A couple of illustrative examples are included to show the ingenuity of the method which is supposed to have an advantage for on-line implementation in preventive and emergency control.
