To develop the high performance thermal protection technologies for atmospheric re-entry vehicles, NASDA has been conducting research on the erosion mechanism of the Carbon/Carbon (C/C) materials with CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposited)-SiC thermal protection coatings. The oxidation and erosion phenomena of the C/C materials had been made clear under the atmospheric re-entry conditions. The quality of CVD-SiC thermal protection coatings was assessed to be an important factor for understanding the erosion characteristics of the C/C materials. High purity CVD-SiC was prepared in this respect. The static heating and the plasma wind tunnel tests have been performed to compare the erosion behavior with those of the C/C materials. The results of the static heating tests have been evaluated and the similar phenomena with those of the C/C materials were observed. This paper describes the outcomes of the static heating tests.
