To decrease the impurity, such as P or S, to the lowest concentration is desired for making a high quality steel. The equilibrium distribution of phosphorus between a solid iron strip and three CaO-bearing systems measured in the temperature range from 1200 degree C to 1400 degree C. The CaO-SiO//2-FeO system has very high dephosphorizing capacity when it is saturated with 2CaO:SiO//2. The CaO-CaF//2-FeO system containing a large amount of CaO and CaF//2 has a high distribution ratio of phosphorus between slag and carbon-saturated iron. When FeO content is low, the CaO-SiO//2-CaF//2-FeO system containing a large amount of CaO has a very high phosphate capacity. In general, iron oxide tends to decrease the phosphate capacity of basic slags.
