Polyester homopolymers and copolymers are prepared using a combination of melt phase oligomerization followed by solid state polycondensation. The physical properties of the resulting polymers are defined by the combination of monomers, and liquid crystalline, semicrystalline, and amorphous polyester compositions are prepared. Special emphasis is directed to understand polymerization mechanisms, and in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is successfully employed in both acidolysis and ester exchange polymerization processes. The effectiveness of the metal catalysts in various melt phase processes is discussed.
