In this paper, we consider the possibility of using NAS battery (NAtrium Sulfur battery) systems not only for "energy storage" but also for "system control". We pay attention to the superior operating control function and instantaneous discharging characteristics of NAS battery systems, and propose a method for determining operation and planning schemes of NAS battery systems for dynamic control of line overloads. In the step of planning, an optimal amount of tripped generation and an optimal allocation and required capacity of NAS battery systems are determined for the most severe contingency. In the step of operation, the dynamic control of NAS battery systems is performed. Simulations are carried out for verifying the validity of the proposed method using IEE of Japan EAST 10 machine system model. Successful results show that the line overloads are dynamically suppressed by the amount of tripped generation and the optimal allocation and required capacity of NAS battery systems.
