The length dependence of group-delay differences between two eigenpolarization modes was investigated experimentally for real single-mode fibers ranging from 0.1 km to 100 km. The mode coupling coefficient was estimated to be 6.3 × 10-3 m-1, which implies that a light pulse might be spread by 0.053 ps/√m. A light pulse was broadened by 17 ps after traversing a 100-km fiber. This implies that there is a transmission distance limitation of 150 km for a 10 Gb/s bit range. It is concluded that polarization-dispersion limitation in real single-mode fibers might be the critical problem in constructing future long-haul high-bit-rate transmission systems.
