The optical absorption spectra of pure silica core optical fibers were measured in the region from 200nm to 600nm. An absorption band at 340nm is observed in samples manufactured by a certain plasma method, and the tail of this band strongly affects the visible range. A 245nm band, believed to be caused by oxygen vacancies, is observed in low OH samples. This band is observed in samples which show no peroxy-radical related ESR signals. It seems that when the sample lacks oxygen, a 245nm band is observed, while it has too-much oxygen, peroxy-radicals are observed. In OH-rich samples neither 245nm band nor peroxy-radicals are observed. This seems to be the effect of either OH termination or manufacturing method.
