Rayleigh scattering is known to cause transmission loss, and the structural inhomogeneity of a dopant such as Ge is considered responsible, in part, for the scattering. However, little is known of how such a dopant is distributed in fibers. It is shown that the homogeneity of the core glass differs in submicronmeter order with the method of manufacturing the fiber. It is concluded that there is some structural inhomogeneity in the Ge-doped silica core of the fiber made by the vapor-phase axial deposition method.
