A Poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) based ionomer with pendant oxyethylene sulfonic acid was synthesized by the bromination of PPO. The bromination of PPO was carried out with NBS and benzoyl peroxide under irradiation with a 100-W flood lamp in CCl4. Thermal analysis were performed on a Mac Science TG-DTA2000 equipped with a Bruker MS9600 mass spectrometer at a heating rate of 10°C/min under an argon atmosphere. The degree of bromination was found to be 0.22 Br per repeating unit by 1H NMR analysis. The.
