Examines the impact of the recent appreciation of the yen on the Japanese economy by focusing on its effects on the structure of foreign trade and on unemployment, both at sectoral level. The hypothesis on the effect of the appreciation of the yen is that it precipitated the structural changes, rather than caused them, therefore the issue is examined in the medium- to long-term perspective. -from Authors
