The time variation of the electron density has been measured in the early afterglow of microwave-pulse excited He, Kr, and He-Kr gas discharges. It is observed that the decay of the electron density is mainly caused by volume recombination of electrons and ions, and that an ionization by He metastable atoms occurs in the afterglow plasma, and that about 2 mu sec after, the decay of electron density decreases.
