This paper proposes a new method for assessing multi-swing transient stability using the single machine equivalent (SIME) method, for power systems which have highly-complex dynamic characteristics. In this paper, the fundamentals of SIME are first explained as the basic theory of the proposed method. Then, the generator grouping method and the stability margin computing method used in this paper are reviewed respectively, focusing on the 1st swing instability. Next a dynamic single machine equivalent which analyzes the multiswing instability is introduced, and then the above two methods are embedded in it to compute multi-swing stability margins. Simulations are conducted on a 3-machine 9-bus system and IEEJ EAST 10-machie 47-bus system to assess the validity of the proposed method.
