This study identifies the transmission characteristics of a coughed air using a developed cough generator containing a silicon head device with an oral airway. Baby powder with a diameter range of 0.3-170 μm was emitted horizontally. The volume of the coughed air was set at 0.9L, with an air pressure of 0.4 MPa, ejection time of 0.35 s, and opening space of 4 cm 2. A particle sensor counted the number of >0.5μm particles under masked and unmasked conditions. A high concentration of particles was measured at a distance of 1 m from an ejection point without a mask, while a low concentration was observed at a distance greater than 1 m from the ejection point. Particles reached the point that was 2 m from that with a mask, although at all points, the particle number with a mask was approximately half that without a mask.
