N2 - A video coding algorithm for digital storage media (DSM) is currently being studied by the Moving Picture Experts Group of ISO. This paper proposes two new techniques for improving the retrieval functions and coding efficiency of DSM. The first is a hierarchical intraframe coding scheme for flexible fast forward/reverse playback mode implementation, which is a requirement peculiar to DSM. The second is a global motion compensation scheme to improve coding efficiency by compensating for camera movement, e.g. pan and zoom, using three parameters. Simulation results show the feasibility of the proposed techniques.
