This paper is based on the presentations at the 12th SETAC Europe LCA Case Studies Symposium at Barcelona in December 2002, the Second Meeting of the International Society for Industrial Ecology at Ann Arbor in June 2003, and the International Eco-Efficiency Conference at Leiden in April 2004. We thank the participants at the conferences, in particular, Erik Dietzenbacher, Faye Duchin, and Sangwon Suh, for valuable comments and discussions. Needless to say, any possibly remaining errors and shortcomings are our own. The research of the first author was partly supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research B17710033.

N2 - This paper is concerned with a decision analytic extension of the waste input-output model, based on the method of linear programming. The resulting model, which is named the waste input-output linear programming model, allows one to automatically obtain an 'optimal' waste management and recycling strategy from among a given set of alternative feasible strategies. The model can thus explore the extent to which a given measure of eco-efficiency can be maximized by an appropriate combination of existing (technological and resource) potentials. An application to Japanese data is also presented.
