Zirconia substrates with periodic surface microstructures formed by irradiation with a femtosecond laser previously enhanced osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), associated with a reduction in the cell attachment area. Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) are clinically less difficult in harvesting the cells than BMSCs. In this study, we investigated the effects of zirconia substrates with the periodic surface microstructures on osteogenic differentiation of rat ADSCs. Zirconia substrates with the periodic surface microstructures enhanced not adipogenic differentiation but osteogenic differentiation of rat ADSCs, associated with a reduction in the cell attachment area. Therefore, zirconia substrates with surface periodic microstructures formed by irradiation with a femtosecond laser could be useful in bone tissue engineering using ADSCs when BMSCs are unavailable.
